5 Simple DIY Gift Ideas for Everyone
When deciding what to make for those on your Christmas list, consider their likes and dislikes, hobbies, interests, and more. That said, you don’t need to master all things crafty-snazzy to deliver something spectacular and memorable. In fact, you can even use technology as your personal assistant for a helping hand. Here are a few ideas to explore:
- Personalized mugs, tumblers, or water bottles
- Personalized T-shirts or sweatshirts
- Handmade candles
- A cozy scarf, hat, and gloves
- A painting wall art — made by an artist or one from your inner Picasso, of course
Personalized mugs, tumblers, water bottles, and shirts are easy enough to do. Canva’s simple graphic design tools are fantastic to whip up a spectacular design and have the item shipped straight to your door (or your recipient’s). And anyone can use it. If you want some additional standout design skills, Canva offers some great (free) video tutorials to help you out.
You could also use Canva to personalize apparel. But if you have a knack for art, a great stencil kit, and some fabric paints, you can also create a masterpiece on your own that they’ll love and cherish as well.
Here’s another option that I used just last year — buy a T-shirt transfer with a design they’ll love, then iron that sucker on when no one’s looking, wrap and voila! I did this for my son last year. He loves Minecraft, so I scoured the web until I found the perfect iron-on transfer for a plain sweatshirt I picked up. He loved it and still wears it this year.

Homemade Christmas Gifts: 5 Edible Treats They’ll Devour
Homemade treats like cookies in tins, baked quick breads, and more are classics that have been around since the dawn of time! Of course, now these ideas have expanded into other areas to include:
- Jams, jellies, and preserves
- Salsas
- Dry soup mixes in a jar
- Cocoa kits in a jar
- Even meals in a jar!
There is no end to how you can twist, turn, bend, and contort the homemade edible treat gift. Literally, there are gazillions of different ideas. It’ll work as a gift idea if it can be canned, baked, dried, jarred, or bottled for safe, temporary storage.
My landlady gives us a loaf of homemade banana bread every year, and we love it! A friend gave us a small assortment of homemade jams one year. They were fantastic! I’ve personally passed out more homemade Christmas cookies, coffee cakes, friendship loaves, brownies, cupcakes, and muffins than the big man in the red suit can consume in a 24-hour sugar rush. Don’t discount the power of edible goodies!
Want a way to package cookies that’s stylish, festive, and easy on the budget?
You could plate them on a paper plate with festive plastic wrap and some ribbon. You could also use plastic or metal cookie tins. Although these can get pricey. Or, you could grab some cute and disposable cookie and treat boxes. I like the latter and will be grabbing some for us to use this year, too. I love the ones with the peek-a-boo windows and rustic festive designs.
8 Gifts That Keep on Giving: DIY Home Decor
Sometimes, this phrase comes with negative connotations, but not this time. DIY home decor is the epitome of the ‘gift that keeps giving’ because it’s practical, personal, and thoughtful. Think of:
- Homemade quilts
- Hand-made bedspreads
- Pillows or pillow covers
- Lap blankets
- DIY coasters
- Homemade picture frames
- Hand-painted home decor signs
- Hand-painted pots for those indoor garden enthusiasts
These are all fabulous ways to give something great on a dime while dishing out some serious sentimental value. Best part? You can make some of these gifts in bulk (though personalized to each recipient — because that’s the key) and cross off a bunch of people from your holiday shopping list!
As an added perk, those killer crafting skills double as a way to earn extra cash to boost your savings or get your hustle on. I wouldn’t be the Frugal Hen if I didn’t find a savvy way to monetize those awesome craft skills, now would I? Besides, we could all use extra money, especially after the holidays, to eliminate holiday debt or increase our savings.
Gift Sets That Feel Extra Special
Gift sets are like getting an extra cherry on top of your holiday season. And with the right set, you gain some mega friendship points with your gift-giving finesse. Seriously! The trick (as with any gift) is knowing the recipient well enough to understand what they truly like and appreciate in life — hobbies, interests, etc.
For instance, giving a luxurious bubble bath set to someone who only takes showers would make no sense. They wouldn’t use it. And you wouldn’t give a gal nailcare and polish essentials if she doesn’t do her nails — and doesn’t want to. That’s plain silly — not to mention a wasted gift.
So, choose carefully.
With gift sets, you can either DIY a set or buy them pre-made and ready-to-go. I’ve done both. Each year, I usually give my girls a small gift set that generally includes:
- A large, festive reusable plastic cup with lid and straw or water bottle (the gift set receptacle)
- A bottle or two of nail polish in their favorite color
- A nail file
- A hand cream mini
- A few pieces of festive, individually wrapped candies
Of course, if you want a larger gift set, then go bigger and grab a small basket or gift box to fit more goodies. Alternatively, we’re busy women. Some of us are more so than others. If you find you lack the time to throw together a DIY gift set, then check out some of the many fantastic options available online, like these three:
Sustainable Homemade Christmas Gifts
Love the planet and want a few eco-friendly gift options? I got your back! Sustainable gift options need not come from a store — although there’s no hard and fast rule saying they can’t; that’s up to you and your budget.
That said, there are plenty of ways to give homemade Christmas gifts that are personal, festive, and sustainable.
Are you a crafty person, or someone willing to watch a YouTube tutorial on how to make a simple craft and put that knowledge to work? If you shouted, “Yes,” then here are a few ideas to get you started.

Reusable Shopping Bags
There are many ways to make reusable and personalized shopping bags, from upcycling used feed bags to using fabric from clothes that have been collecting dust in the pit of your closet. You can — and should —personalize these reusable bags and make them festively spectacular for each recipient. Also, they can double as a gift bag to hold more cool stuff.
As the Frugal Hen, I’ve taken old chicken feed bags, cleaned them up, and upcycled them into cute, fun, and fabulous reusable shopping bags — and they’re super durable, too. Feed bags are fantastic because they’re made from strong, weather-proof material. All you need to do is clean ‘em up and add some bling!
Psst! Iron-on transfers are also a great way to jazz up and personalize some homemade cloth shopping bags and totes!
Alternatively, you could knit or crochet a small shopping bag, too. Just be sure to use some heavy-duty yarn like rug yarn — hemp, jute, or cotton work well, too.
One-of-a-Kind Handbag
Got clothes you or the kids no longer need, but the fabric is still in great shape? Grab your shears and get to snipping those ‘buggers’ into squares. You can create handbags and more with the leftover fabric. I once took a couple of pairs of old jeans that no longer fit and transformed them into purses for my girls when they were little. Then, I jazzed them up with lace and patches.
Denim is durable for projects like this, but you can use almost anything. Just remember to add a lining to the inside. You can find everything you need at your local craft store, a salvage store, or an online store — from buttons and zippers to sewing supplies and iron-on patches, they’ll adore.
Side note! Pick a needle made especially for denim if you’re working with thicker fabrics like denim or corduroy. I’ve busted way too many needles before I realized this.
Homemade Skincare Products
Whipping up some DIY skincare products like lip balm, sugar scrubs, or body butter is easier than you realize. And if you’re using natural ingredients, it’s fabulous and eco-friendly, too. You’ll need to package them correctly, though. So snag some glass jars, lip balm pots, or dispensers before beginning.

Homemade Christmas Gifts Kids Will Love
It’s sometimes tricky to shop for kids, but certainly not impossible. The same is especially true if you’re shopping on a tight budget or looking for a gift they’ll love and that’s affordable. So, I’ve put together a few ideas to help out. I’ve also done some of these over the years with my own kids. So, these are Frugal Hen tried-and-true winners in my household.
DIY Playdough
You’ll need a few small plastic or glass jars with wide-mouth lids for this. Once you make homemade playdough, you don’t want it drying out — just like the name-brand stuff, it gets hard as a rock once dry. That said, there are plenty of recipes for homemade playdough online. Check the ingredients list, and add some color. I’d recommend creating 3-4 colors so your kid has a few to play with. Oh, and as a bonus, grab some small, plastic cookie cutters and a rolling pin from the discount store. These are great ways to inspire creativity and keep them playing.
Give Busted-Up Old Crayons New Life
You’ll love this if you’re a mom with a crayon-wielding kiddo. When my kids were young, we always bought new crayons because the old ones would get broken and quickly become indistinguishable nubs. A great way to breathe new life into old crayons is to repurpose them — transform those nubs into new gifts for your little artists.
Grab a silicone baking sheet with small, unique shapes. Fill each opening with bare crayon nubs (paper labels removed). Bake or microwave until they melt (about 5-7 minutes in the microwave). Pop the tray into the freezer and let it cool before you pop the ‘new’ crayons out and package them up. Voila! New, unique crayons. As a perk for a child-approved gift set, bundle these coloring creations with some craft paper and a coloring book.

Homemade Doll
Handmade or hand-sewn dolls are another fantastic idea. You can buy doll kits from the local craft store or online. They generally include a doll pattern, but some have doll kits with the basic parts needed to make an adorable doll for someone special. You’ll need some fiberfill and a doll outfit — or you can make one yourself. A relative once made a doll for me years ago when I was a little girl. I still have her. She’s wearing a baby dress now because the little crocheted dress, booties, and hat went missing long ago. But I still have ‘Betsy,’ 35+ years later.
Stuffed Animal
.My kids — even today — love stuffed animals. One year, when I was short of cash, I bought a stuffed animal pattern, fabric, and fiber fill from the local salvage store. And I made each of my kids a stuffed animal with button eyes. They loved them and still have them today.
And you know what’s funny, I didn’t buy the fancy, furry fabric, either. I purchased the best cotton fabric I could afford, and that’s what I used. So, my son’s stuffed bear is blue with brown polka dots, but he still cherishes that thing.
Homemade Games
Whether you’re on a budget so tight every penny screams for mercy, or just looking for something unique and personal, a homemade game is a great idea — and it need not be complex. Simple games will do just fine.
All that’s needed:
- An open mind
- A little creativity
- And a few supplies
Homemade checkers or tic tac toe with a quilted fabric board and a hand-sewn, drawstring storage bag — all personalized to the child’s interests make fantastic homemade Christmas gifts!
You could create your own board game and player pieces with a bit of creativity. Or simplify and make it a dice game! Alternatively, use Canva, creativity, cardstock, and a printer to create a fun card game. The possibilities are endless!
Make This Christmas Extraordinary
Make this holiday season fun, fabulous, and personalized with homemade Christmas gifts. Whether crafting something cute, cozy, edible, or practical, a personal touch delivers more meaningful gifts, and those on your gift list will cherish them for years.
Remember, it all begins by understanding your recipient’s tastes, preferences, hobbies, and interests. After that, a world of possibilities is waiting to be explored.
So get crafty, my friends. Get creative, and make this Christmas one to remember!
